Mango Avocado Salsa

Mango Avocado Salsa

This Mango Avocado Salsa is quite possibly my absolute favorite salsa! It is fresh, colorful and easy to make, consisting of ripe avocado and sweet mango. It can be served as a dip or with a variety of dishes, including these healthy Turkey Tacos! A perfectly refreshing salsa to serve in the summer time.

Ingredients needed to make this refreshing Mango Avocado Salsa:

  • Avocado – I prefer to use Haas avocados for this recipe. *See the note below on how to pick out the perfect avocado!
  • Mangoes – Any variety will do in this recipe! *See the note below on how to pick out the most perfectly sweet mango.
  • Red Onion – I love using red onions in my salsa because it adds a very distinct flavor. It also gives the salsa a great pop of purple color!
  • Lime – The juice of a lime brings added citrus flavor and freshness to the salsa. The acidity also helps to slow down the browning process of the avocado.
  • Cilantro – A very popular ingredient in fresh salsas and for a good reason. It adds a lemony and peppery taste to the dish! I’m pretty sure that cilantro is one of those “hate it or love it” kind of ingredient. So if you are not a fan of it, try using fresh parsley instead!
  • Olive oil – What doesn’t this ingredient go great in?!
  • Jalepeno Pepper (optional) – If you love spice, add a jalepeno pepper for an added kick!

Tips and hints on how to pick the perfect avocado and mango for this salsa:

*Avocado:
Be sure they are ripe. When picking the perfect avocado, the skin should appear dark with just hints of green. It should be a little soft, but not mushy. Do not choose one that has dents in it, as that indicates it may be too overripe. If it is too soft, it will not hold its shape as well in the salsa, therefore you want to pick one in between- not too soft yet not too firm. If you do not plan on making the salsa that same day, choose an avocado that is on the firmer side. That means it is not yet ripe but will ripen within a couple days when you are ready to use it.

There are also times that I have gone to my local grocery store and cannot find a ripe avocado for anything! I search and search some more without any luck. In this case, you may be able to ripen the avocado a bit faster by placing them in a brown paper bag and leaving them on your counter at room temperature.

*Mango:
Similar to the avocado, you may want to choose a mango that is softer to the touch but not too soft or mushy. A perfectly ripe mango will slightly give when squeezing it but an unripe mango will be very firm. You can also give it the sniff test! If the stem end smells a bit sweet, then it is more than likely the mango is ripe and ready to use that day.

You can also use frozen chopped mango to make it easier. You can find a bag in the freezer section at your local grocery store. Simply follow the directions on the bag on how to properly thaw the mangoes before adding to the salsa. However, it may make the salsa a bit too watery but you can always give it a try!

What can this Mango Avocado Salsa be served with?

I personally LOVE this salsa served on top of tacos, specifically these healthy Turkey Tacos. However, there are a ton of other dishes that this goes perfectly with. Just to name a few:

  • Shrimp or beef tacos
  • As a dip served with chips
  • Chicken or steak fajitas
  • On top of grilled chicken or fish
  • On hamburgers or black bean burgers
